Courageous Advocacy

Christian Aid states that:

"Children and Young People are integral to building a fairer and more sustainable world for everyone. Courageous Advocacy equips them with the skills, tools, confidence, and opportunity to speak up and take action on issues of justice. Courageous Advocacy is an integral part of the Church of England Education Office's vision for education.

We at Lady Hasting's School are dedicated to supporting the children to learn, not only about global justice issues, but to tips and tools to support them to help shape the world around them through courageous advocacy and campaigning.

Our commitment is to support children and young people to use their agency with autonomy and freedom on the issues they care about. We provide learning and advocacy tools on themes and issues we work on that empower children and young people to make up their own minds and act accordingly.

It is wonderful to raise money for great causes such as Comic Relief and Children in Need, but it is important the children know and understand about the why and what behind the global issues. Why is there poverty and famine? What can we do locally to support this? What can be done on a more global scale?

This year we have been focusing on local issues within our community and how we can support those children in the locality who are less fortunate than us.

We gathered pupil voice through School Council about what is fair and not fair. We agreed that it is not fair that all children should have access to:

-books at home

-breakfast at home

In support of our this, we have:

-redeveloped our library to donate books we no longer need. We asked Leeds Library Service to sort through our books and filter out any that were not relevant to our school. This enabled us to donate over 950 books to the local Book Project, for families in Leeds to be able to access books for free from a central hub. They were delighted and our children have felt such a sense of joy being able to see the families enjoying our donations, being able to support reading in their homes.

-asked for a donation of a box of cereal from families across school. Our Worship Crew have recorded a video of the donation day and then donated these to Kippax Food Bank.
